Moments that Defined a Career
It's where we put the things we can't afford to think about.
The mangled bodies. The dead children. The screams that follow you home. The stress. The politics. The hypocrisy. The betrayals. The calls that never stop coming.
You learn to put it all in the box because there isn't time to deal with it. The radio is already dispatching the next call.
The Box isn't there to heal you. It's there to help you survive another shift.
But the box isn't infinite.
Every traumatic call, every sleepless night, every betrayal, every piece of yourself you lock away fills it a little more. You convince yourself you're fine because that's what cops do. You keep going. You keep serving. You keep stuffing more inside.
Until one day, the box reaches its limit.
At first, tiny cracks appear. Maybe it's the nightmares. The anger. The anxiety. The memory problems. The exhaustion. You tell yourself it's just stress.
But the cracks keep growing.
And eventually...
The Box breaks.
When it does, everything you've spent years burying comes crashing out at once.

3 Year Old Found at the Bottom of the Pool
Life Saving
On April 11, 2009, Shawn responded to an emergency call regarding a 3-year-old girl found unconscious at the bottom of a pool. Arriving within two minutes,
Shawn found she had stopped breathing. He immediately performed emergency back blows and abdominal compressions, successfully clearing her airway and administering rescue breaths until she could breathe unaided. He picked her up and carried her to an ambulance, single-handedly saving her life.
Paramedics explicitly informed leadership that Shawn's rapid, decisive actions were the exact reason that little girl survived. (Case #09- )

Resuscitating an Overdose Victim
In another vital crisis response, Deputy Keeffe arrived at an emergency scene to find a young woman completely unresponsive due to an accidental overdose on unprescribed medication. Recognizing that every second counted, Shawn immediately began manual chest compressions, and resuscitated the victim, before paramedics arrived and took over.
The following day Shawn received a phone call from a fellow deputy. She asked if he had performed CPR the previous night, Shawn confirmed he did.
The phone was silent for a minute. The voice at the other end then stated, “that was my daughter.”

Saving a Stabbing Victim (Sucking Chest Wound)
On December 2, 2008, Shawn responded to a scene where a victim had been stabbed, sustaining a highly lethal sucking chest wound.
Relying on his rapid tactical medical training, Shawn immediately sealed the wound with a pressure bandage to prevent atmospheric air from collapsing the victim's lungs, successfully preserving the victim’s life.

COMPASSION
The Elderly Widow's Lock Installation
On December 9, 2016, Shawn responded to an elderly burglary victim with severe health issues. She was worried about her safety because there were no signs of a forced entry and was quoted $1,200 by a locksmith.
Shawn explained she can purchase new locks from a big box store for $60-$80 and gave her his cell number if she couldn’t find someone to install them.
She texted Shawn a few days later and without hesitation he returned to her home and installed them himself.
She tried to give him money, but he refused and stated, "I only wish someone would help my mom if she were in need." (Case #16-89083)
Compassionate Crisis Intervention
On April 1, 2009, Shawn responded to a highly stressful, emotional 911 call from a desperate mother whose daughter was in severe crisis. Recognizing the family from a previous call, Shawn bypassed rigid force and instead used patience, politeness, and absolute professionalism to de-escalate the situation.
He successfully earned the daughter's trust and confidence, guiding her safely into protective custody under the Marchman Act so she could receive critical medical evaluation.
The grateful mother later wrote a letter to the Sheriff's Office, stating she would "forever be indebted" to Shawn for his profound insight, empathy, and assistance during one of the worst nights of her life.
